How It Works and How Data Flows

This page explains how StoreInsight turns your store’s camera video into analytics data — and which data is stored and which is not. It covers what you need for privacy and security reviews.

System overview

All video processing required for analysis happens on the analysis device (Edge server) installed inside the store.

  • Store cameras — The analysis device receives video (RTSP streams) from the IP cameras installed in the store. If the store already records to an NVR, that recording continues exactly as before; StoreInsight only receives the streams alongside it.
  • Analysis device (Edge server) — On-premises inside the store, it anonymizes the video and analyzes it with AI, producing metadata and statistics.
  • Dashboard — Presents reports built from that metadata and those statistics.

Camera video is processed only on the in-store analysis device; only metadata and statistics are sent to the cloud.

How video is processed

The analysis device processes incoming video in the following order:

  1. Video ingestion — Camera video is received and held only in a temporary buffer for processing.
  2. SEAL anonymization — Before analysis, personally identifiable information such as faces is removed from the video.
  3. AI analysis — The anonymized video is analyzed for visitor counts, dwell, attributes (estimated gender and age band), and movement paths.
  4. Metadata and statistics generation — The analysis results are converted into metadata and statistics — numbers and coordinates — and stored.

Once processing is complete, the source video and temporary frames are discarded immediately and are never retained on the analysis device.

What is stored — and what is not

StoredNot stored
Aggregate statistics such as visitor counts and dwell timeCamera source video
Attribute estimates such as gender and age band (aggregated)Biometric data such as face images
Location metadata such as zones and movement pathsInformation identifying a specific person, such as names
Statistics used for reports and CSV exports

Everything you see in reports or download as CSV is built from this metadata and these statistics. No information that could identify — or be traced back to — a specific individual is stored.

Dashboard access and data transmission

So that the dashboard can be viewed from outside the store, the analysis device transmits only metadata and statistics to the cloud dashboard.

  • The only data transmitted is the metadata and statistics needed for dashboard viewing and report generation. Source video is never part of the transmission.
  • Transmission uses only outbound HTTPS (TLS, port 443) from the analysis device to the cloud. No inbound connections into the store network and no VPN are required.
  • The dashboard requires signing in with an issued account, and every connection is encrypted with HTTPS (TLS).
